As civilization is being swept away by a new ice age, superstition and magic are replacing science and technology. An old man, one of the last survivors from the pre-ice age world, and his twenty-one-year-old grandson are on a hunting trip into the dead city of Boston. Dogs are hunted, slavery has returned, and men mine beneath a hundred feet of snow and ice to salvage tools and treasures of a lost civilization that only the old man remembers.
The Dog Hunters An Apocalyptic Ice Age Story eBook John Silveira
Set a few decades into a near future Earth in which a new Ice Age has decimated most of civilization, “The Dog Hunters” follows two characters, an older man and his 21-year old grandson, as they trudge a snow-packed New England searching for food for their village. All dialog is between these two as the old man imparts his wisdom to the younger man. It’s a touching, sentimental and occasionally humorous passing of the torch tale.If there was a weakness it’s that I didn’t quite buy that this world would exist as described. Everyone encountered seem hostile. If this were the case it’s doubtful whole communities could live in the relative proximity suggested without wiping out or absorbing each other. It seems more likely that they’d be trading and working together on some level.
If you’re wondering if this is a tie in to Silveira’s excellent “Danielle Kidnapped”, other than the Ice Age itself there are no situations or characters common to the stories.
Warning: It’s only about half the advertised length of 151 pages. I flipped the page at 48% to see an afterword. The balance reprints the first chapters of “Danielle Kidnapped”. I don’t feel cheated that this was shorter than advertised, but it really threw me off while reading as I expected it was building towards something…then it just ended in an unexpected spot. Had I known it would be over at 48% I would have realized what Silveira was doing and enjoyed it more. So, keep 48% = END in mind if you read. I really wish they had a better way to show story length on Kindle.

The Dog Hunters An Apocalyptic Ice Age Story eBook John Silveira Reviews
This is a great short story about life in a post apocalyptic world. I'd love to see it expanded into a full length novel.
The story wasn't bad. I liked the ice apocalypse theme since it isn't visited often. The only part I could have done with out was the weed smoking and course language in the prequel story, but that's just a personal hang up so if that stuff doesn't bother you you'll enjoy this book.
Interesting and well written short story. Wish the author would expand it to a full novel!
Hopefully this is just a space-filler to introduce the sequel to Danielle kidnapped book two. Waiting for years for that follow-up, and hear it on its way "in a few months". Hurry, Mr Silveira.
But it is only half of the book. The second half is a preview of the author’s other book “Danielle kidnapped”. The Dog Hunters was so good though that I’m not bothered. Very fun , short read. Having lived in Boston for 16 years it was fun reading about places I knew about. I would very much like to see more short stories from this author in this same setting. Oh, the preview of Danielle kidnapped was pretty good so I’ll probably buy that as well.
Those of us who remember the '70s will remember the "Coming Ice Age" as the ecological crisis du jour.. This story ably describes what life would be like under that scenario.
The two protagonists, a man who lived through the transformation and his grandson born during the ice, are out on a hunting trip to get meat for their village. Their prey wild dogs, which seem to be the only available meat. The quest is dangerous on many levels, not only is the cold to be fought, but tribalism has revived slavery. All of which makes for a tense situation.
I don't want to spoil the story, so I will just suggest that you read it for yourself
