All in It "K " Carries On Ian Hay 9781289540982 Books

This book takes up where The First Hundred Thousand left off. Unlike the first book, this one has the definite feel of official wartime propaganda. All of the failures and foibles of the British High Command on the Western Front along the Somme and other actions is completely glossed over, and these operations are instead presented as outstanding successes against the cowardly and demoralized Boche...Humbug. Anyone who would call the follies of The Somme offensive a success surely has some ulterior motive. The overall quality of the anecdotes is somewhat more constrained, than the first book and more than a little contrived at times. Those were hard times for British troops on the Western Front, casualties were very heavy, and many regiments were so depleted during this time that for all intents and purposes they were new outfits in later actions.

A good read none the less, but, the rah-rah aspect can't be ignored.

All in It "K " Carries On Ian Hay 9781289540982 Books Reviews

Well written, true story about an exceptionally difficult time for a generation of the best young men & women of the period.
Good book. Covers the daily life of line British soldiers on the front lines during WW1 . Accents sometimes hard to make sense of . Good read for an all around overview.
This work follows on from "The First Hundred Thousand" the survivors of the first book go on as experienced soldiers, this is a mixture of humour and tragedy as only a soldier will understand
The second book is as fabulous as the first! The wit and humor the author uses to describe the horrors of trench warfare does not detract from the sacrifices his fellow soldiers made. True UK "Stiff upper lip". Great read!
Found a way to make trench warfare a bit entertaining. A good read.
A fairly good follow-on to The First Hundred Thousand" However, good though the training and battle scenes are, there is a feeling that the British high Command is doing a great job and is winning the war hands down. Ian Hay writes a good book but he was a high ranking officer in the British Army and his somewhat biased attitude comes through in this book. A pity, because he tells a good story. Perhaps a bit too good?
A. Millar
A continuation of an earlier book (The First Hundred Thousand) by the same author; it picks up the story of the regiment and the survivors. The tone of this volume is more muted than the first, leaving much of the humorous observations at a dull roar. Understandable. This is the change from being stuck in basic training and a first deployment to a seasoned soldier who has adapted the training to hard earned battle skills. Reading between the lines, this book still provides a lot of insight into a soldier's life "in the weeds" as opposed to the grand strategy of The Great War (Word War 1).
